Hey there! I’m Kaustav Ghosh — a software engineer who is trying to make your face look good over dodgy internet connection. If you’ve ever been on a video call that didn’t freeze at the worst possible moment, you’re welcome. (Okay, probably not because of me specifically, but I’m working on it.)
Currently, I’m at Microsoft, mostly focused on real-time video, network congestion control and video codecs — dedicated to the dark art of shipping video across the internet without suffocating the router — convincing pixels to trim the fat and bandwidth to cooperate. Before that, I built things at Tonbo Imaging — where we made thermal cameras cool (well, technically they detect heat, so… warm?) — and at Tata Consultancy Services. I also interned at Confirmtkt, where I learned that getting a confirmed train ticket in India is an extreme sport.
My interests are a bit of a mixed bag - ranging from real-time video, BWE & congestion control, video codecs, WebRTC and Chromium, all the way down to the OS-level depths of AOSP and Linux.
When I’m not staring at packet traces, you’ll find me watching football. I’m a big FC Barcelona fan, which in recent years has been an exercise in emotional resilience.
This blog is where I write about the things I work on and learn — mostly so future-me has notes to refer to, but if you find it useful too, that’s a bonus.
Oh, and in case you were wondering about the profile photo — that’s me captured through one of the thermal cameras we built at Tonbo Imaging.
